In Loving Memory of Ashley Roger-Downs

Reel Ladies met Ashley Downs and her beautiful family at our 2nd Annual Spanish Mackerel Tournament,  March 28, 2026, which benefited Anchorage Children’s Home and our free Reel Ladies kids’ fishing clinics. Ashley, her husband, and their two boys made such a lasting impact on our hearts. They were a joy to meet, and after winning third place, they generously donated their winnings back to our cause.

We are heartbroken that Ashley left this world far too soon, but we will not let her love for fishing, family, and giving back fade away. In her honor, Reel Ladies Sportfishing will continue sharing that love by teaching children how to fish, providing rods, reels, tackle, and fishing opportunities locally and internationally in her name.

Thank you to everyone who donates in Ashley’s memory. Your gift will help place fishing equipment in the hands of children and continue a legacy of love, generosity, and time spent on the water.

Fishing Forward in Honor of Ashley Rogers-Downs

Every rod placed in a child's hands helps continue Ashley's legacy.

Reel Ladies Sportfishing Team is a volunteer-based group of lady anglers dedicated to empowering women and children through the sport of fishing. Through community events, free fishing clinics, youth outreach, and our annual Spanish Mackerel Tournament, we work to teach children the basics of fishing while encouraging confidence, conservation, sportsmanship, and lifelong memories on the water.

One of our most meaningful missions is using proceeds from our Spanish Mackerel Tournament to support local children by providing fishing rods, reels, tackle, shirts, and hands-on fishing experiences. The children are taught how to cast, hook, dehook, and safely enjoy the outdoors, including special fishing days at St. Andrews State Park in support of Anchorage Children’s Home. Local news coverage has highlighted that proceeds from the tournament help provide each child with a rod and reel combo, starter fishing kit, and a memorable day learning to fish.

In honor of Ashley Rogers-Downs, who loved fishing with her family, encouraged children to fish, and supported the heart of what Reel Ladies stands for, memorial donations will be used to purchase fishing rods and equipment for children. This gift will continue Ashley’s love for fishing by helping children experience the joy, confidence, and memories that come from time spent on the water.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Reel Ladies Sportfishing in Ashley’s honor to help provide fishing equipment and fishing experiences for children.

Reel Ladies Initiatives: Inspiring the Next Generation

The Reel Ladies Sportfishing Team is a volunteer-based sisterhood of lady anglers who share a passion for fishing, the great outdoors, and empowering women and children through the sport of fishing. Founded by Suzy Nichols, the team’s mission is to create safe, responsible anglers while inspiring future conservationists.

Through events like Reel Kids Fishing Rodeos and Clinics, the Reel Ladies provide children with fishing rods generously provided every year by Tarpon Docks Seafood Market and Half Hitch , equipment, hands-on instruction, and tournament experiences that teach confidence, sportsmanship, and a love for the water. The kids enjoy visiting with all the Reel Ladies mascots; Teddy the Bear, Peach the Starfish and Shirley the Shark. The kids are provided water generously donated each year by Culligan Water and enjoy snacks and treats throughout their fishing clinic provided by the reel ladies team members. The little ones, play a fishing game and also win treats, fish hats, toys and a toy fishing rod and game pieces, also sponsored bt the team members. This fishing game experience sparks their interest to fish when they are old enough to hold a fishing rod on their own.

The Reel Ladies also celebrate women in fishing through the annual Ms. Reel Lady program, crowned at the Bay Point Billfish Open. This is not a beauty contest, but a recognition of a lady angler’s fishing experience, community service, conservation mindset, and passion for teaching and empowering others. Each year, Ms. Reel Lady is awarded at least a $1,000 educational scholarship to help advance her skills in a marine-based or fishing-related field, especially in what has traditionally been a male-dominated industry. This generous scholarship has been donated every year since 2023 by Emerald Coast Urgent Care, helping the Reel Ladies recognize and support the many talented female anglers in our community.

The Reel Ladies proudly host annual Spanish Mackerel Tournament, with the third annual event in April 2027 honoring Ashley Rogers-Downs, a true Reel Lady whose love for fishing, family, and children will forever be remembered.

Their outreach has also grown internationally, including mission efforts in Costa Rica where they provided fishing rods, school supplies, toys, books, and love to children in need.

More than a fishing team, the Reel Ladies are a family built on faith, friendship, service, and community. Through clinics, outreach, tournaments, and donations, they continue placing rods in children’s hands and creating lifelong memories on and off the water.

God bless all who support, volunteer, donate, and believe in their mission.
